Jointly called by: Disabled People Against CutsMental Health Resistance Network, WinVisible (women with visible & invisible disabilities)

We are supporting a legal challenge by a woman with mental distress against the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) rules.  The government is discriminating against people with serious mental health conditions who are unable to plan or undertake a journey because of overwhelming psychological distress.  A recent change means you can’t score enough points to get full mobility benefit — unless you also have physical mobility problems.  See here for more info on the legal challenge.  We will attend the High Court case on Tues 12 and Wed 13 December, starts 10.30am in Court 50. More info about the legal challenge: http://www.publiclawproject.org.uk/news/92/high-court-hears-pip-disability-discrimination-case.

PIP and the abolition of Disability Living Allowance are part of the government’s massive benefit cuts which are devastating to sick and disabled people, including single mothers, and pensioners – 86% of austerity cuts fall on women. The parliamentary Work and Pensions Select Committee inquiry into the benefit assessor companies Atos, Capita and Maximus, has received over 3,000 testimonies from claimants, many with invisible or mental health conditions denied mobility benefit or other benefit.

  1. After being diagnosed with cancer stage 4 and having extensive treatment (which got a diagnosis after 10 months of urgent referrals by Dr and dentist being deemed as routine) I emailed Judith Paget and 2 days later an appointment was suddenly available!! I was awarded the highest rate of everything. After 3 years to the day my payment stopped. Had a home visit to look at the situation and scored 0 points. Have done a MD and received 2 points. Now still waiting for tribunal case (10 months after no payment at all) . Struggling with essential bills also ongoing treatment (dental work at hospital, my depression and anxiety disorders are off the charts. On meds for the effects of radiation and chemotherapy . Absolutely gobsmacked and all faith in the system has been rocked. Anybody else this has happened to?

    • Hi Gabrielle, really sorry about this situation. We’d suggest to contact your MP constituency caseworker and ask them to write to the DWP. Also Macmillan may be able to support you with your benefits and what can be done urgently? All best wishes, WinVisible
