Disabled people are not worthless
Lord Freud’s willingness to consider paying people with disabilities £2 an hour, the closure of the Remploy factories and the demeaning treatment disabled people receive from Atos are starvation policies. The Nazis called us “useless eaters”, expressing similar contempt.
This devaluing of human life is widespread. Mothers are called “workless” as if caring for people is a waste of time. Carers are low-paid or unpaid, because those they care for don’t matter. The welfare state recognised that we are entitled to help because everyone is entitled to the care of society. The welfare reforms of all the main parties are destroying that entitlement.
